Domingos C. Maciel, 93, of Norwalk CT, passed away peacefully on November 25, 2018 at Norwalk Hospital after a brief illness. Domingos, son of the late Manuel and Olympia of Portugal, immigrated as a young man to the United States and became a U.S. citizen. He spent his remaining years as a resident of Ridgefield and Norwalk with his wife of 69 years, Mary, who was born in Norwalk.
Domingos is also survived by his children: Andrew Maciel and his wife Julie of Stratford; Rosemary Maciel and her husband Joseph Kennelly of Manhattan; grandson Zachary, and numerous nieces, nephews and their children in Connecticut and Portugal.
As captain or crew, Domingos enjoyed competing in local sailing races with his fellow Shore and Country Club and Norwalk Power Squadron members. An avid gardener, his green thumb produced unparalleled tomatoes; he coaxed the straggliest plants back to lushness and gave a bumper crop of fresh figs to his wife each season from a tree he carefully moved from garden to garage each winter.
Quiet but never still, Domingos was always ready to help a friend or family member, and showed untiring patience in caring for his much-loved dogs, the last of which was an abused rescue.
