Nicholas J. Cutrone, 95, life-long Norwalk resident died peacefully at his home on August 27, 2018. He was born here on October 12, 1922. He was a musician / band leader from a musical family, who was fondly known to many around town as Uncle Nick. He graduated from Norwalk High School in 1940.
He proudly served his country during World War II as a member of the 96th Signal Battalion, Joe Stillwell Hdq as a cryptographic technician. In that role he travelled the entire Burma Road, into Kunminkg, China. While in China he joined General Pinky Dorn’s special band as drummer until the end of his service. He was honorably discharged in 1946.
Upon his return, he spent many years working at the Midtown, the family’s restaurant on Wall Street in Norwalk. He later joined the Recording Industries Music Performance Trust Fund, where he retired as General Manager and remained as a consultant until age 85.
He was a life member of the American Legion, VFW, Disabled American Veterans, and the American Federation of Musicians, Local 38.
In addition to his parents, John and Columbia Fallo Cutrone, he was predeceased by his beloved wife of 65 years, Shirley Serena Cutrone, his brother, John “Junior” Cutrone, and his niece Debbie Cutrone.
He is survived by his son John N. Cutrone and his wife Suzanne Fandel, his nephews and nieces, Jack Cutrone, Frank Cutrone and Terri Tegano-Cutrone all of Norwalk, Jennifer Byrnes of Charlotte, NC and great-niece Katie Cutrone of Denver, CO.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the many people who cared for Nick in recent years, in particular his devoted caregiver Dawn without whom his wish to remain home would not have been possible, his dear friend Ilanko who accompanied him when he could no longer drive, Dr. James Lewis and his nurse Donna and during his final days the wonderful Hospice team from Vitas Healthcare.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday August 31 at 10:30 am in St. Matthew Church, 216 Scribner Avenue, Norwalk, CT. Internment will be private.
