Jack T. O’Brien

Jack T. O’Brien, 82 of Madison, CT; husband of Evelyn LaCroix O’Brien died Thursday, August 25th in Yale New Haven Hospital.

Born in Stamford CT, he was the son of the late John M. and Sarah Dobson O’Brien. Mr. O’Brien was a former Norwalk resident and local Land Surveyor serving Wilton, Greenwich and Darien. Mr. O’Brien was an avid swimmer and enjoyed bocce and fishing. Mr. O’Brien was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corp. serving during the Korean War. Jack was a kindhearted loyal husband, father and friend and will be  greatly missed.

Surviving in addition to his wife are his children, Glenn O’Brien, Kevin O’Brien, Ann Clark and Lynn Kapp, seventeen grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son John M. O’Brien.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, August 30th at 10:00 AM in St. Matthew Church, 216 Scribner Avenue, Norwalk. Burial will follow in St. John Cemetery, 223 Richards Avenue, Norwalk.

Friends may visit with the family on Monday, August 29th from 4:00PM to 7:00PM at Collins Funeral Home, 92 East Avenue, Norwalk.

 


Edward C. Sennewald, Sr.

Edward Carl Sennewald, Sr., 88, of Norwalk, passed away on Sunday, September 4, 2016, in Venice, Florida.

Born in Stamford, CT, on August 27, 1928, he was the son of the late Barry and Gertrude Barnes Sennewald.

In his later years Ed loved spending time in Florida.  He went every day to the beach to feed his feral cats and to enjoy the company of many friends he made through the years at the North Jetty in Nokomis Florida.  Known as the” CAT MAN” he was loved by all.  He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Ed is survived by his three children, Linda Sennewald of Venice, FL; Edward Sennewald, Jr. and his wife Vanessa of Gainesville; GA, and Sally Sennewald of Venice, FL, brother, John Swanson of Virginia Beach, VA, sister, Sandra Lowe of Norwalk, CT, sister-in-law, Dorothy Holland Morris of SC, and by several nieces and nephews. Ed is also survived by his good friends, Florence Caporale and Laura Barrett of Venice, FL.

In addition to his parents Ed is predeceased by his wife, Louise Holland Sennewald, stepfather; Edwin Swanson, sister, Dorothy Sennewald Memale and brother, Barry Sennewald.

Friends may call Tuesday, September 13, from 4:00 to 7:00PM at the Collins Funeral Home, 92 East Avenue, Norwalk. Services will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday, September 14, at 10:00 AM. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery, 81 Riverside Avenue, Norwalk.

Ellen T. Rossi, 87, wife of the late Joseph L. Rossi, Sr. of Norwalk passed away on Saturday, September 10, 2016.

Born on September 13, 1928, in Mount Vernon, NY, she was the daughter of the late George and Antoinette Brewster.

Ellen is survived by her sons, Arthur Ehlers, Jr., of Norwalk, Richard Ehlers and his wife Diane of Stuart FL, and Kenneth Ehlers and his wife Lesley of Mesquite, NV; daughter, Gail Teed and her husband Jerald of Norwalk, CT; eleven grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, George Breswter Jr.; sisters, Margaret DeMarco, Nancy Bareford and Linda Mangieri; several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, Joseph, Ellen was predeceased by he her former husband Arthur Ehlers, Sr.; grandson, David Swanson, Jr.; daughter-in-law, Kathleen Ehlers; brother, Richard Brewster; sisters, Georgette Pollard and Barabara Sesito.

Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, September 14, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the Collins Funeral Home, 92 East Avenue, Norwalk. Services will be held in the funeral home on Thursday, September 15, at 10:00 AM. Interment will follow in St. John Cemetery, 223 Richards Avenue, Norwalk.

Kerstin (Chris) Redin

Kerstin (Chris) Redin, 93, a Swedish immigrant and longtime resident of Stamford and Norwalk, passed away peacefully at Norwalk Hospital on Friday, September 16, 2016.

Chris loved her family and especially being mormor/farmor to her grandchildren. Chris bowled avidly, first large pins and later Wii Bowling where she earned her title “The Swedish Champ.” She rooted for the NY Mets and enjoyed stained glass making, ceramics, watercolors, Bingo and spending time by the ocean. While pint-sized in stature, Chris had an enormous heart. She loved and was loved by many.
Kerstin is survived by her children Rolf (Vera), Liz (Duncan) Payne, Linda Doyle, Roland (Debbie), Roger (Alison), her 11 grandchildren and her 13 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Lennart, daughter Marie Siladi, son Robert and granddaughter Tracey Payne.

Edith C. Gaiser

Edith C. Gaiser, wife of the late Gerhard Gaiser, passed away Monday morning at her home in Norwalk.  She is survived by her son Mark Gaiser, his wife Marya, and their daughters, Tara and Dani, all of Newtown, and her daughter, Petra Gaiser of Stratford.  She is also survived by a brother and a sister, both of whom live in Germany.  A service will be held on Friday, September 23, 2016, at 10:00 AM at Riverside Cemetery, 81 Riverside Avenue, Norwalk.  In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to the American Cancer Society, www.cancer.org.

Paul P. Turzer

Paul P. Turzer, 74, of Norwalk, husband of Madeline McGarty Turzer, passed away Thursday, September 29, 2016 at the Norwalk Hospital.

Born July 20, 1942 in Stamford, CT, he was the son of the late Paul and Ella Turzer. Mr. Turzer worked as a driver for Dominic Fuel until his retirement. He loved to read and play golf and was an avid Giants fan.

In addition to his wife Madeline, Mr. Turzer is survived by his daughter Shawn Velez and her husband Lou of Florida, his sister Dorothy Palmenta of Vermont and his two brothers Kevin Turzer of California and Kenney Turzer of Stamford.  He is also survived by 2 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his sons Paul Anthony Turzer and Michael Patrick Turzer and sister Cathy Turzer.

Friends may call on Sunday, from 3:00 – 6:00 PM at Collins Funeral Home, 92 East Avenue, Norwalk. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday at 10:00 AM in St. Matthew Church, Norwalk.  Burial will follow in St. John Cemetery, Richards Avenue, Norwalk.

Rita Squires Jaeger

Rita Squires Jaeger, a beautiful, intelligent and loving woman, passed away this past Saturday, October 1, 2016 at the age of 69.

Rita and her husband and best friend Stephen just celebrated their 49th anniversary. He loved her very much as did sons Stephen and Thomas and daughter Susan. Rita was born in Philadelphia and subsequently moved with her family to Long Island, NY where she met her husband. During her school years she developed a love of painting and art history which led to a successful career in interior decorating and design. She bought and ran her own decorating and home design business in 1986 and ran it successfully for ten years before transitioning to the provision of consulting services to her many clients in not only decorating and design but home construction. She continued in this effort until her illness struck in May, 2016.

Rita lived in Sanibel, FL and also maintained a residence in Norwalk, CT. In addition to her husband and three children and their spouses she is survived by eight wonderful grandchildren, her sister Patricia, who provided loving care during her illness, three brothers, Bill, Paul and Tom and a younger sister. During her life, and particularly during her illness, she had the continuous support of many dear friends.

Dolores Sierman Dube

Dolores Sierman Dube, 85, passed away on Saturday, October 1, 2016. She was a long time resident of Norwalk, who was devoted to her family and loved animals.

Born in Stamford, CT, on July 11, 1931, she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Anna (Martinielli) Roberts.

Dolores is survived by her sons Edward Sierman and his wife Jacque Gorman and David Sierman; as well as by grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her sister Marion Cullen.

In addition to her parents, Dolores is predeceased by her sister Louise DiChiara and her brother Arthur Roberts.

Friends may call on Saturday, October 8, from 10:30 to 11:30 AM at the Collins Funeral Home, 92 East Avenue, Norwalk. A service will be held on Saturday in the funeral home at 11:30 AM. Interment will be private.

Roland R. Marcotte

Roland R. Marcotte, 76, of Norwalk, died Sunday, October 2nd, in Notre Dame Convalescent Home.

Born in Norwalk, February 20, 1940, son of the late Roger and Eveline Marcotte, he attended St. Joseph School and was a graduate of J. M. Wright Technical School. Mr. Marcotte was a U. S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War; and served in Japan. He was a sheet metal worker and member of Sheet Metal Workers Union Local #38. Mr. Marcotte was also a member of Knights of Columbus Council #46, St. Joseph Parish and the parish Holy Name Society.

Survivors include a sister; Terry Fontaine and her husband, Al, brothers; Jean Paul Marcotte and wife Stella, Louis Marcotte and wife Diane, all of Norwalk nephews; Craig Fontaine, of Glastonbury, Scott Fontaine, of Norwalk, two grand nieces and two grand nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, October 6th, at 10:00 A. M. in St. Joseph Church, 85 South Main Street. Burial with military honors will follow in St. John Cemetery.

Anna Mary Reda, 85, wife of the late Jean David Reda died peacefully at on October 2, 2016, 9:01am at St. Mary’s Hospital –Vitas Hospice Unit in Waterbury, CT.  Anna was born December 15, 1930, in Norwalk, CT.   Anna was the daughter of Generosa and Emelia Festa.

The values Anna instilled in her life are: Faith in God, a strong work ethic, caring for others and her love of children and animals.  Her favorite pastimes were playing cards, enjoying tag sales and spending time with her special needs son.

Anna was a loving mother of five children: Debra (Larry) Johnson of Lewisville, NC, David Reda of Watertown, CT, Diane Reda-West of Westport, CT, Joseph (Lisa) Reda of Bethlehem, CT and Anne (Gerry) Vilhotti of Thomaston, CT.

Most precious to Anna are her grandchildren:  Eric (Elizabeth) West, Lauren (James) Simmons, Kristie Reda, Mary Jo Reda and Emily Vilhotti.

Anna joins her 2 brothers; Alfred & Samuel Festa in Heaven and is survived by her sisters; Mary Manzi, Josephine Purcell, Faye Dubois, Rose Russo, Helen Barati, Tillie Besaw as well as her brother Patsy Festa.

Helga M. Abrach

Helga M. Abrach, 75, of Weston, died suddenly Tuesday, October 4th in Norwalk Hospital. She was the wife of the late George L. Abrach.

Mrs. Abrach was born in Czechoslovakia, March 5, 1941, and raised in Germany. She and her late husband have been area residents for over forty-five years. Prior to retirement Mrs. Abrach had been the office manger for County Dental Porcelain Lab and a receptionist for Dr. Daniel Arutt, DDS for many years.

Survivors include two daughters; Monika Abrach, of Norwalk and Nicole Abrach, of Alexandria, VA, a sister-in-law; Cecile Beck, of Trumbull and cousin; Klaus Hieronymus, of Bedford, NH.

The family will receive friends at Collins Funeral Home, 92 East Avenue, Sunday, October 9th, from 2:00 to 5:00 P. M.

Benjamin (Ben) Picci

Benjamin (Ben) Picci, age 93, of Norwalk passed away peacefully on October 7, 2016. Ben was born on September 5, 1923 in Philadelphia, PA to Rafael and Nunzita (Maisano) Picci. He attended Norwalk Public Schools and remained a resident of the city for 93 years. It was in Norwalk he met his future wife, Virginia (Conte) Picci, the love of his life. Ben and Virginia were blessed to share 71 years of marriage together.

 

In 1938, Ben began learning the art of barbering from his uncle, Frank Maisano, who owned a barber shop in South Norwalk. In 1943, he enlisted in the Army and served as a Staff Sergeant with the 3944th signal message detachment in the Philippines. During his service, Ben not only had the honor of meeting General MacArthur, but ultimately gave him a haircut! Ben was honorably discharged in 1946 and came back to the States with several decorations and citations – a victory medal, good conduct medal, American theater campaign ribbon, Asiatic Pacific theater campaign ribbon, and a Philippine liberation ribbon with one bronze service star.

 

Waiting for his return, was Virginia, whom he had married in 1944. Ben returned to barbering and opened City Hall Barber Shop and then The Executive House with his brother in law, Frank Conte. He continued working as a barber at the East Avenue location, long after selling his business. He retired after 77 years, in the fall of 2015.

 

Aside from his distinguished military service and career in barbering, Ben was most importantly, a family man. He and Virginia raised three children and also served as foster parents for over 42 years. Ben was an avid NY Giants and NY Yankees fan. He delighted in spending time with his family; watching his great grandchildren play together, sharing an Italian Christmas Eve meal with everyone, or just listening to his wife tells stories of their courtship.

 

Ben is survived by his wife, Virginia (Conte) Picci; sons Gary (Kathleen) and Mark (Alison) Picci, foster daughter MaryAnn Conlan, her children, and several nieces and nephews. He was pre deceased by his daughter, Maria Michele (Missy) Picci. Ben also leaves his five grandchildren and their spouses, Elizabeth (Nicholas) Esposito, Garrett (Carolyn) Picci, Jennifer (Matthew) Prokop, Travis and Justis Picci. He was also loved and adored by his six great grandchildren, Luca, Jaxon, and Cara Esposito, Ella and Andrew Picci, and Eleanor (Nora) Prokop.

Linda Lee Foldeak

Linda Lee Foldeak, 70 of Stratford, CT died Saturday, October 8th in the Bridgeport Hospital.

Born in Norwalk she was the daughter of the late Albert M. and Ethel Magyar Foldeak.  Ms. Foldeak had worked for Fast Electronics in Stratford as a Production Manager for 27 years. She loved pets and watching the cooking, travel and golf channels.

Linda will be missed by her brother, Richard D. Foldeak, her sister, Debra Rosolen and her husband Jack, and her close friend Peggy Beale.

Services and burial will be private.

Dr. Maximilian Trost

Dr Maximilian Trost, a Norwalk resident for almost 60 years, died last week at the age of 96 in Delray Beach, FL. He lived his life to the absolute fullest, independent and sharp until the end.  Max was on Normandy Beach on D-Day, had three great loves in his life, and practiced Optometry for almost 40 years in Norwalk.  He was married 26 years to his first wife, Pearl Korbin Trost. They had two sons, Robert and Jonathan.  Max and Pearl were instrumental in the early years of STAR and CACLD. Pearl died in 1979 of lymphoma., Hannah Wolfenstein Trost, was his wife for 21 years and they traveled the world together.  Hannah passed in 2001. His final love was Sarah Bernhardt. They were together in Delray Beach, Florida and Norwalk, CT until her death in 2011.  Maximilian loved to sing in barbershop quartets, played tennis for many decades, was a long time Cubs fan (he waited 96 years and they still haven’t won a world series), and seemed to know everyone in Norwalk.He is survived by his two sons and his many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held graveside on Thursday, October 13, at 2:00 PM at the Temple Israel Cemetery on Richards Avenue, Norwalk.

Jean E. DeRosa

Jean E. DeRosa, 86, beloved wife of the late Arthur F. DeRosa formerly of Norwalk, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 11, 2016, in Cape Coral, Florida.

Born on January 20, 1930, in Norwalk, she was the daughter of the late John T. and Nicolene S. (Santella) SantoPietro.

Jean worked as a Special Ed Aide for many years at Brien McMahon High School. Her students adored her, as much as she adored working with them. Recently during her free time, Jean enjoyed visiting with friends and participating in activities at The Baldwin Senior Center in Stratford, CT and later when she moved to Florida, she frequented The Lake Kennedy Senior Center in Cape Coral, FL. She enjoyed going on day trips and dancing Zumba. But best of all, Jean greatly enjoyed spending time with her family and those she loved. Nothing gave her more joy than being a loving wife and devoted mother and grandmother. She was a proud grandmother.

Jean will be missed by all those who had the pleasure of knowing her.

Jean is survived by her son, Alan DeRosa and his wife Darlene of Stratford, CT, daughter, Doreen Peterson of Cape Coral, FL. her grandchildren, Nicky and Alec, her sister-in-law, Eleanor Fufaro of Largo, FL. and many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend their gratitude to the dedicated and loving nurses and staff at the House Hospice in Cape Coral, FL for their care and compassion they showed Jean.

Calling Hours will be held on Tuesday, October 18, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at the Collins Funeral Home, 92 East Avenue, Norwalk. Kara Kathleen Kovlakas

Kara Kathleen Kovlakas, 32, wife of Andy Kovlakas, of Trumbull, passed on Thursday, October 13 th at home. She was born on October 14, 1983, in Norwalk, CT, the daughter of Margaret Morrow and the late Bruce Morrow.

Kara graduated from Norwalk High School in 2001, she received a Bachelor’s degree in Education from the University of Arizona in 2005 and a Master’s degree in Teaching from Sacred Heart University in 2010. Kara spent the last 11 years as an elementary school teacher at Marvin Elementary in Norwalk.

She truly loved guiding and teaching young people in the community she grew up in. Kara spent every spare minute with her beautiful children and family who she cherished. Kara was the brightest light in any room with the most amazing smile and she will be missed by all who knew her.

She is survived by her husband, Andy Kovlakas of Trumbull and their children, Aydan and Ari, her mother, Margaret Morrow of Norwalk, five sisters, Kimberly Abbazia (Joesph) of Cos Cob, Stephanie Peckham (Gray) of Fairfield, Lauren Shrage (Robert) of Trumbull, Kyle DiScala (George) of Norwalk, Jenna Garry (Brian) of Norwalk. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, in-laws, cousins, aunts and uncles. She was preceded in death by her father, Bruce Morrow and her maternal and paternal grandparents.

Friends may call, Monday from 4 pm to 8 pm at Collins Funeral Home, 92 East Ave., Norwalk, CT. A funeral service will be celebrated Tuesday at 10 am in St. George’s Church, 238 West Rocks Rd., Norwalk, CT. Burial will be private.

Betty A. Pia, 76, residence of Norwalk, Connecticut, passed away early Saturday morning on October 15, 2016. Born December 2, 1939, she was the oldest daughter of the late William O’Grady and Marion Matzenger O’Grady.

Mrs. Pia graduated from Stamford High School where she then went on to start a family, work for the SNET Phone Company, and found her career book keeping for City Carting and Recycling, a company she stayed with for over 30 years. She was a devout parishioner of Our Lady of the Rosary Chapel in Monroe from 1976 to the present day. She was a blessing to those who knew her, and a mother figure to anyone lacking one.

She is survived by sons, Michael T. Pia of Norwalk, CT and Jeffery W. Pia of East Windsor, CT; 3 granddaughters, Ashley and Jennifer Pia of Norwalk, CT and Emily Burke of Southington, CT; 5 siblings, Kathleen Bellantonio of Palm Springs, FL, William O’Grady of Trumbull, CT, Marion Olson of Phoenix, AZ, Karen O’Grady of Naugatuck, CT, and Debra O’Grady of Norwalk, CT; mother-in- law Norma Pia of Norwalk, CT and sister-in- law Barbra Varunes of Stamford, CT as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews.

There will be a Christian Burial service at Our Lady of the Rosary Chapel, 25 Pepper Street, Monroe, CT at 11:00 am on Thursday October 20, 2016. Immediately following the Mass, she will be buried besides her late mother in St. John’s Roman Catholic Cemetery, Camp Ave in Darien, CT. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made out to Our Lady of the Rosary Chapel.

Millicent B. Hall died on Friday October 7, 2016 in Fort Myers, Florida. She was born in Kingston, Jamaica and had 5 children and many grandchildren including Dave Young Jr. and David Young.

Deputy Chief Robert A. Spielman, N. F. D. Retired

Retired Norwalk Deputy Fire Chief Robert A. Spielman, 91, husband of Lois Mola Spielman, died October 18, 2016 in Norwalk Hospital.

Born in Norwalk, July 14, 1925, son of the late John F. and Ruth Spielman, he was a life-long Norwalk resident and a World War II veteran of the U. S. Navy. Joining the Norwalk Fire Department in 1949, Mr. Spielman rose through the ranks and retired in 1986 as a Deputy Chief. Bob and his family were charter members of St. Jerome Parish. He was a member of Frank C. Godfrey Post 12, American Legion, a 30 year member of the South Norwalk Boat Glub and had been a member of Shorehaven Golf Club.

Survivors in addition to his wife include two sons; Robert W. Spielman, and his wife Bette, of Ridgefield, William Spielman and his wife Mary, of Norwalk, a daughter; Robin Williams, also of Norwalk, a brother; Charles Spielman, of Florida, eight grandchildren; Suzanne, Jacquie and Robbie; William, Sean, Eric, Meghan and Kaitlan, four great grandchildren; Quinn, Margaret Dylan and Moira.

In addition to his parents he is predeceased by brothers; David, John and Richard Spielman, and sisters; Lois Morin, Evelyn Sull and Jean Spielman.

Services will begin Thursday, October 27, 2016 at 10:00 A. M. at St. Jerome Church, 23 Half Mile Road, with the celebration of Mass of Christian Burial. At the conclusion of Mass the family and friends will gather in front of the church, Military honors will be presented by members of the United States Navy, Connecticut National Guard and Norwalk Fire Department.

UPDATE: PAUL POKROP PASSED AWAY OCTOBER 24, 2016.  ALL ARRANGEMENTS ARE POSTPONED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.

 

Phyllis S. Pokrop, 92, of Norwalk, died October 18th, at Notre Dame Convalescent Home. She was the wife of Paul C. Pokrop and the mother of Edward Charles Pokrop.

Born in Meriden, she was the daughter of the late Otto and Lydia Strobel. Mrs. Pokrop, and her husband were members of the Neptune Boat Club. Both her husband and son are members of the South Norwalk Boat Club, and the family has enjoyed boating and fishing on Long Island Sound for many years.

Friends may call at Collins Funeral Home, 92 East Avenue, Tuesday, Nov. 1st, from 10:00 A. M.; with a prayer service at 11:30 A. M.
