Gertrude Weiss Sirkin

Gertrude Weiss Sirkin, 94, of Norwalk, wife of the late David Sirkin, passed away Monday, January 18, 2016 at Norwalk Hospital.

Born February 12, 1921 in Norwalk, she was the daughter of the late Nathan and Pauline Fischler Weiss and was a life-long Norwalk resident.

In addition to working outside the home and raising two children, she dedicated her life to helping others and was an active volunteer in numerous charitable organizations.

She is survived by her son Michael Sirkin and his wife Janice Phoenix of Bonsall, CA; by her son-in-law Chris Forbes of Pittsburg, PA and his children and grandchildren; her brother and sister-in-law Aaron and Gladys Weiss of Palm Coast, FL; several nieces and nephews; and her and her daughter’s good friend Pauline Michek.

In addition to her husband David, Gertrude was predeceased by her daughter Elaine and brother and sister-in-law Morris and Marion Weiss.

The funeral and burial at Beth El Memorial Park, Norwalk, CT was private, according to the family’s wishes.  There will be a service in Gertrude’s memory at Congregation Beth El on Sunday, January 24, at 1:15 p.m. Contributions in her memory may be made to your favorite charity or to Hadassah, care of Wendy Engel, 12 Princes Pine Road, Norwalk, CT or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (www.stjude.org).


Anastasios S. Kyriakides

Anastasios S. Kyriakides, (also known as Andy S. Kydes) departed peacefully in his sleep with his loving family at his bedside. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Maria Polyronides Kyriakides and was the son of the late Savvas and Despina Simoulidies Kyriakides. Andy Emigrated from Greece, in 1953, to find a better life for his family and the “Golden Dream” offered by the United States of America. He sponsored many Greek families, to come to America, who shared the same dreams of working hard and creating better lives for their children in the “Land of Opportunity”. He worked many years for and retired from Pepperidge Farms in Norwalk.

Andy was a soldier of the Greek Army and fought in World War II against the Germans during their invasion of Greece; he had a deep love for Greece and America. His nick name was “Lyre-chee” which refers to his talent of playing the ancient Greek string instrument called the lyre. He brought much song, dance and joy, within the Greek community, while singing and playing the lyre at weddings and baptism.

Andy was predeceased by his sister Elleni Kyriakides Savvaides. He has two sister; Athena Kyriakides Yerinides and Sotira Kyriakides Petridis, who live in Norwalk and five nephews; Bill Yerinides and John Yerinides, of Norwalk, Savvas Yerinides of Stratford, Stavros Savvaides of Louisiana and Tasso Savvaides of Trumbull, and a niece Theresa Aptalides Fronzi of Fairfield. He also had many cousins that live in Norwalk and Dobbs Ferry, NY.

Friends may call on Thursday, January 21, from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at the Collins Funeral Home, 92 East Avenue, Norwalk. Services will be held on Friday, January 22, at 10:00 AM at St. George Greek Orthodox Church 238 West Rocks Road, Norwalk. Interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery, 81 Riverside Cemetery, Norwalk.

Maria (Mary) Giglio

Maria (Mary) Giglio, 81, wife of Onofrio Giglio, of Norwalk, passed away on Wednesday January 20th at her home.

Born March 23, 1934 in Lauro, Italy, she was the daughter of the late Lugo Vivenzio and Antonietta Schiavone.

Maria worked at Bradlees Department store for over 30 years. She is survived by her husband Onofrio Giglio; son Anthony Giglio and his wife Marcie of Norwalk; her daughter Anna Buono and her husband Francesco of Norwalk; grandchildren Angela, Peter and Adriana Buono also of Norwalk; 3 great-grandchildren; Kristina and Aliana Buono and Juan Mendez. She is also survived by a brother Sabastiano Vivenzio of Italy and sister Lucia Cianciullo of Norwalk. She is predeceased by her sister Elizabeta Vivenzio of Italy.

Friends and family may call on Sunday, January 24, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at the Collins Funeral Home, 92 East Avenue, Norwalk. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, January 25, at 10:00 AM at St. Matthew Church, 216 Scribner Avenue, Norwalk. Interment will follow at St. John Cemetery, 223 Richards Avenue, Norwalk.

Nettie Shipman

Nettie Shipman, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 20th, surrounded by her loving family.

Born in Stamford, CT on January 31, 1931, she was the daughter of the late William and Rhea (Gartenberg) Urmann. She was a graduate of Stamford High School in Stamford, CT and NYU Stern School of Business in 1952. Upon graduation, she worked as a legal secretary in Manhattan and then, after marriage, moved to Morristown, NJ where she was an Administrative Assistant for Combustion Engineering. She moved to Norwalk, CT in 1961 where she raised her family. She was predeceased by her best friend and husband, Stanley Shipman.

A resident of Norwalk for over 50 years, she was a member of Temple Shalom and a Life Member of Hadassah. She was also previously a member of the B’nai B’rith organization. She was dedicated to her family and friends and enjoyed reading, politics and American history. Her wonderful sense of humor, quick wit and warm spirit will truly be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

She is survived by her son, Gregg Shipman and his wife Marci of Glastonbury, CT, her daughter, Roberta Tatulli and her husband Chris of Trumbull, CT, four grandchildren, Daniel, Michael and Andrew Shipman of Glastonbury and Zachary Tatulli of Trumbull.

Services will take place on Tuesday, January 26th at 11:00 AM at Temple Shalom, 259 Richards Avenue, Norwalk, CT. Burial will follow at the Independent Hebrew Society/ Temple Shalom Cemetery. Maria R. Florio

Maria R. Florio, 101, wife of the late Ernesto Florio, died Sunday, January 24, 2016 at her home in Norwalk.

Born September 8, 1914 in Italy, she was the daughter of the late Giovanni Mattera and Clorinda DiMeglio Mattera.

Mrs. Florio is survived by 5 children: daughter Rosa Morgera, and sons John Florio (Eleanor), Philip Florio (Patricia), Salvatore Florio (Mary) and Joseph Florio (Robin). She is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by daughter Clorinda and son Giacomo and by grandchildren Ernesto Florio and Maria R. Florio.

Friends may call on Wednesday, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Collins Funeral Home, 92 East Avenue Norwalk. Mass will be celebrated Thursday at 10:00 AM in St. Philip Church, Norwalk, CT. Burial will follow in St. John Cemetery, Norwalk, CT.

Rose Festa Izzo

Rose Festa Izzo, 83, of Norwalk, died Thursday, January 28, 2016 in Norwalk Hospital. She was the wife of the late Joseph Izzo.

Born in Norwalk, August 27, 1932, daughter of the late Joseph and Jennie Festa, Mrs. Izzo had been a secretary with the former Merchants Bank. Rose was an active member of St. Thomas the Apostle Parish. She volunteered at the church’s Second Chance Thrift Shop and was a member of the parish choir. Rose also sang in St. Joseph’s choir, prior to joining St. Thomas Parish. She had a passion for singing, baking and tag sales: Rose was famous for her Christmas cookies.

Survivors include a daughter; Vanessa Jacques, two sisters; Annette Festa and Catherine Verda and Catherine’s husband, James, a granddaughter; Reagan, many family members and friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, February 1st, at 10:00 A. M. in St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 203 East Avenue. Burial will follow in St. John Cemetery.

Friends may call Sunday, January 31st, at Collins Funeral Home, 92 East Avenue, from 3:00 to 6:00 P. M.

Andrew J. Lucas, Sr.

Andrew J. Lucas, Sr., 95, of Norwalk, husband of Diane Cable Lucas died Saturday morning at home with his family.
Mr. Lucas was born in Fairfield, CT and was a retired Inspector for the City of Norwalk, D.P.W. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, WW II.
In addition to his wife he is survived by a son, Andrew Lucas. He was predeceased by a son Andrew J. Lucas, Jr.
Graveside services will be held on Tuesday, February 2nd at 1:00 PM in St. John Cemetery, 223 Richards Avenue, Norwalk.

Lucy Regina Dyke

Lucy Regina Dyke, 93, wife of the late Dr. Joseph Dyke of Norwalk passed away on Monday, February 1, 2016, at her home.
Born on November 10, 1922, in Brooklyn, NY she was the daughter of the late John and Mary Belford Mooney.
Lucy is survived by two cousins, Mary Hopek of Brooklyn and Catherine Dwyer of New York and their children; John Hopeck (Marylynn), Paul Dwyer (Marysue), Joseph Dwyer (Patricia), Jimmy Dwyer (Eileen), Robert Hopper (Kathleen). She is also survived by her loyal and loving friends Edgar and Ligia Murillo-Nelson.
In addition to her husband Lucy was predeceased by her daughter Regina Dyke Crespo Esq.
The family would like to express gratitude to the staff at the Norwalk Hospital, Dr. Chi, St. Matthew Church for their spiritual care and Richard Albertelli.

George M. DiScala

George M. DiScala, 65, of Norwalk, husband of Janet Cocchia DiScala, died Monday, February 1st, at home.

Born in Norwalk, November 13, 1950, son of Mary DeMassa DiScala and the late George F. DiScala, he was a lifelong Norwalk resident. A 1968 graduate of Central Catholic High School, George earned a Bachelor’s Degree from Sacred Heart University. He was a longtime builder and real estate developer. An avid outdoor sportsman, George was a member of the South Norwalk Boat Club, East Norwalk Boat and Yachting Club, Stamford Fish and Game Club and a Life Member of the N. R. A.

Survivors in addition to his wife and mother include a son; George F. DiScala and his wife Kyle, a daughter; Jessica Putetti and husband Kevin, one brother, John DiScala and wife Debbi, three grandchildren, Anthony, Macie and Luke, all of Norwalk

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, February 5th,, at 10:00 A. M. in St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 203 East Avenue. Burial will follow in St. John Cemetery.

Steve G. Karakasidis

Steve G. Karakasidis, 48, of Norwalk passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, February 3, 2016.

Steve was born on November 29, 1967 in Norwalk. A life-long resident, he attended local schools, graduating from Brien McMahon High School. He continued his education at Pace University with a BA and MA in Business Administration.

Steve was man filled with love for his family and friends. Steve will be remembered as a caring son and brother. His one true love was his daughter. Their bond as father and daughter put a smile on the faces of everyone who saw them together. Steve is survived by his mother, Eleni Karakasidis of Norwalk, and his sister, Despina Karakasidis of Norwalk. He is also survived by his wife Maria and daughter, Elena of Queens, NY. His memory will be cherished by his extended family and friends. He is predeceased by his father, George Karakasidis.

Marion Veronica Beke

Marion Veronica Beke, 93, of Norwalk, wife of the late Joseph ‘Joe’ Beke, died peacefully Sunday at home, surrounded by her family.

Born in Norwalk, March 6, 1922, daughter of the late Antonio and Victoria Macaluso, she was a lifelong city resident. Mrs. Beke graduated from St. Joseph School and was a 1939 graduate of Norwalk High School; continuing on to earn an Associate’s Degree from Katharine Gibbs College. She retired as a librarian at Norwalk High School after over twenty years with the Norwalk School System. Mrs. Beke was a longtime parishioner of St. Thomas the Apostle Church.

Survivors include a son; William J. Beke and his wife Sherrie, of Norwalk, a daughter; Ellen Beke Cyr and husband David, of Cumberland, Maine, two grandchildren; Sarah Beke, of Norwalk, Erica Beke Hocking, and her husband, Ryan, of Guilford, three great grandchildren; Phoenix Gardella, Cassidy and Hunter Hocking.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, February 11th, at 10:00 A. M. in St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 203 East Avenue. Burial will follow in St. John Cemetery.

Andrew J. Carriero

Andrew J. Carriero 83 of Shelton, passed away after a long illness on February 15th, 2016 at home surrounded by his loving family. Andy was born in Stamford on February 23, 1932, he is the son of the late Anna (Sposta) Carriero and the late James Carriero.

He was predeceased by his brother Anthony Carriero and his sister Julia Castiglione.
Andy served as a Sergeant, on the front lines, in the Korean War from 1952 to 1954. He was a proud 3rd degree member of the Knights of Columbus for 61 years. Andy was employed by Pitney Bowes, Inc. in Stamford for 42 years as an electrical engineer and later as a plant engineer in the facilities department. After retirement, Andy enjoyed spending time with his family and taking that occasional trip to Mohegan Sun.
Andy is survived by his wife of 58 years, Rosemary (Bria) Carriero, his daughters Debbie Moss (Steve) and Cheryl Donarumo (George), and his loving grandchildren Jason Andrew Moss and Jessica Nicole Pesce, who he adored. Andy will be sorely missed by his family and friends.

Calling hours will be held on Friday, February 19, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM in the Collins Funeral Home, 92 East Avenue, Norwalk. The service will follow at 7:00 PM in the funeral home.

 

Neil G. Farans

Neil G. Farans, 77, of Westport, passed away on Wednesday evening, February 17, 2016 in the comfort of his home.

Born February 21, 1938 in Norwalk, CT, he was the son of the late William and Mildred Gans Farans.

Born in Norwalk, Neil attended Norwalk High School, and graduated from the University of Florida, before joining the Air Force Reserves where he was called in to active duty for the Bay of Pigs. He then returned home to join the family business, Pennsylvania Petroleum Company (Pepco), for nearly 30 years, before founding Eastern Environmental Technologies, a waste management disposal company. He was a past President of the Norwalk Exchange Club, and an active member within the community. Neil was an avid boater, loved gardening, his family, his dogs, and will be forever missed.

Neil is survived by his wife Laura, and his son Brad and his wife Michele of Vail, Colorado. He is also survived by his brother Alvin Farans of Westport, and nieces Danielle Finke and Claudia Morse, and nephews Guy, Steven and Bruce Green.

He was predeceased by his son Greg, his brother Paul and his sister Diane.

Services will be held at Collins Funeral Home, 92 East Avenue, Norwalk on Monday, February 22nd at 2:00 PM. Burial will follow IHS/Temple Shalom Cemetery, 143 Richards Avenue, Norwalk.

Betty Shapiro

Betty Shapiro, 91, who lived all but a few months of her life in Norwalk, died February 17th in Bridgeport.

Born in Norwalk, October 31, 1924, daughter of the late Joseph and Anna Cohen Shapiro of Norwalk. She was a graduate of Norwalk High School, Class of 1942.

She was preceded in death by sisters; Mildred Shapiro Pockell and Ruth Shapiro; and a brother, Morris Shapiro.

Betty worked in the publishing industry until well into her 80s. Betty was an avid swimmer for much of her life and could be seen daily at the Norwalk YMCA pool.

For many years she and Lily dined weekly at Pasta Nostra in South Norwalk and were favorites of the many regulars there.

Miss Shapiro is survived by her sister; Lillian Shapiro, of Bridgeport, her nieces and nephews, David Pockell and Judy Pockell Andrew of California, Michael Shapiro of Massachusetts, Neil Shapiro of Idaho, their spouses, children and grand-children.

Janet Fragale Irwin

Janet Fragale Irwin, 82, of Norwalk, CT, passed away on Wednesday, February 24th at Norwalk Hospital.  She outlived two beloved husbands; John Fragale and later Donald Irwin both of Norwalk, CT.

Born August, 10th, 1934 in Garden City, NY, she was the daughter of John and Madeline Caldwell.  Janet graduated from Sweet Briar College in Virginia, and from Yale University with a Masters Degree in Languages, having been one of the earlier women to graduate there.  Her passion and career focused on travel and language, with particular affection for France and its culture.  This included working for the United Nations as a French/English Interpreter, many years as a primary school teacher, and later as a travel agent, culminating in running her own travel agency.

Janet is survived by her son Marc Fragale and daughter Laurie Martin as well as grandchildren Brian, Michael, and Anthony Martin. She is also survived by her sister Madeline Mueller and niece Jean Sivisky.  Family members also include Marc’s wife Alison Fragale, Donald’s children Patrick, Steven, Marion and Lucy as well as many extended family members and loved ones.

Services are conducted by Collins Funeral Home, 92 East Avenue, Norwalk and St.Thomas The Apostle Church, 203 East Avenue, Norwalk.

A wake will be held at Collins Funeral home on Tuesday 4:00-7:00 pm.  Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in the Church on Wednesday at 11:00 AM with burial to follow in St. John Cemetery, Richards Avenue, Norwalk.

Andrew “Drew” N. Friedman, Jr.

On Saturday morning February 27, 2016, Westporter Andrew “Drew” Norman Friedman, Jr., 86, passed away in his sleep. He is survived by his wife Laura Papallo Friedman and his son, Andrew “Trey” Norman Friedman III and his wife Lorna Owen of Sharon, Connecticut. He was predeceased by his first wife, Barbara “Bobbie” Klein Friedman in 2011.
Drew was born on April 9, 1929 in Mount Vernon, New York. He grew up working at his father’s Summer Camps, Robin Hood and Hiawatha, in New Hampshire. He attended both Westminster Preparatory School and Cornell University.
Drew was well known as a “mover and shaker” in Downtown Westport. He was also a restaurateur who owned the popular Onion Alley on Main Street and more recently he renovated and re-opened Weston’s Cobb’s Mill Inn and acquired the Stonehenge Inn in Ridgefield. He was a man of vision and had the might and the will to make his projects come to pass. His final project was to open the “Celebration of Life Park” by the waterfall at the Cobb’s Mill.
Drew was charismatic and always enthusiastic for everything that life had to offer. He helped many people to achieve their personal and business goals. His marriage to Laura brought him into a large and loving family. He will be sorely missed by all those who knew and loved him. The family will hold a burial service at 4:00 p.m. at Beth Israel cemetery in Norwalk on Tuesday, March 1. A memorial mass, open to the public, will be held at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 35 Norfield Road, Weston, on Thursday, March 3rd at 11:00 a.m.

Pavlos Kalmanidis

Pavlos Kalmanidis, age 75, longtime resident of Norwalk, beloved husband of Eleftheria Gastralas, passed away at home on Sunday, March 6, 2016, surrounded by his loving family. He will be remembered as a devoted husband, father and grandfather who loved his family. He was a kind man, with an amazing sense of humor and a generous heart. He loved to travel with his wife and spend time with family. He will be deeply missed.

Pavlos was born in Spilia Kozani Greece on April 1, 1940 to the late Kosmas Kalmanidis and Kalliope Lambrianidis Kalmanidis. He served in the Greek military where he was awarded multiple citations, including one for marksmanship and received an honorable discharge. He was also drafted during the 1974 Cyprus conflict and served with honor. Pavlos was a devoted family man, who always loved and supported his parents. In 1966, he married the love of his life, Eleftheria. Together they emigrated from Greece to Norwalk, Connecticut with their three young children in October 1975. He retired from Pepperidge Farm in 1995 after 20 years of service. He was a hardworking man, that at times worked three jobs to support his family both in Greece and the U.S. Pavlos was a strong willed man who persevered through numerous obstacles for the benefit of his family. He was a member of the St. George Greek Orthodox Church community and served on the Parish Council. A proud Greek of Pontian heritage, he raised his children to respect their history and traditions.

In addition to his wife Eleftheria, Pavlos is survived by his loving children, son Kosmas Kalmanidis, his wife Voula and son Pavlos of Norwalk, daughter Kalliope Toromanides, her husband George and children Sophia, Dimitrios and Christos of Trumbull, beloved daughter Maria Kalmanidis of Norwalk and brother Konstantinos Kalmanidis and family of Watertown, Massachusetts. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers, Nikolaos and Ioannis.

Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, March 8, from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 238 West Rocks Road, Norwalk. Funeral Services will take place directly at the church on Wednesday, March 9, at 10:00AM. Interment will follow in the Riverside Cemetery, 81 Riverside Avenue, Norwalk.

Ann A. Beres

Ann A. Beres died peacefully in her sleep March 7th. She was born July 26,1933 in Rowayton CT and attended Norwalk schools.. She was predeceased by her husband of 46 years Joseph W. Beres, Jr. former Norwalk Police Chief. She was the daughter of the late John and Anna (Nagy) Arnoczky. She spent most of her professional career as an insurance agent at J.M. Layton in Norwalk. After Joe’s retirement, they spent several years in South Pasadena, Florida where their children and grandchildren would enjoy many vacations. She is survived by three sons, John J. Beres of Milford; Joseph W. Beres III and his wife Karen of Redding;and Michael J. Beres of Florida; her grandchildren Matthew Beres of Florida; Allison Rahmlow (Daniel) of Danbury; Marissa Toth (David) of Ansonia; Stephen Beres of Redding and Ryan Beres of Milford; her great grandson Conor Toth of Ansonia; her brother in law Thomas Beres and sister in law Barbara Moseley, both of Florida.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, March 14th at 10:00 AM in St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 203 East Avenue, Norwalk. Burial will follow in St. John Cemetery, 223 Richards Avenue, Norwalk. There are no calling hours.

Florence T. DiVasto

Florence T. DiVasto, 90, wife of the late Joseph Paul DiVasto of Stamford, passed away Wednesday, March 9, 2016 at Norwalk Hospital. She was born March 5, 1926, in Greenwich, CT. She was the daughter of the late Philomenia and Patsy Figliola.

Florence DiVasto attended Greenwich high school and moved to Stamford when married. She was a very active mother and grandmother. She enjoyed working hard and supporting her family any way she knew.  She worked later on in her life as a care taker for young children including her granddaughter.

She is survived by daughters JoAnne Fisher of Wilton and Lynda DiVasto of Guilford; 1 granddaughter Lyndsay Coppola of Wilton and 2 great grandchildren, Tyler and Jacquelyn Coppola of Wilton. She is also survived by her sister Nelly Ferraris of Ridgefield. In addition to her husband, Joseph, she was predeceased by her sister Eleanor Ioli and Pat Figliola.

There will no public visitation prior to the funeral. Friends and family are invited for a Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday at 10:00 AM at Our Lady of Fatima Parish, 229 Danbury Road, Wilton. Burial will follow at St. Mary Cemetery in Greenwich. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to:  Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (www.pancan.org)

Anne E. Roberts

Anne E. Robert, age 89, wife of the late Dudley E. Roberts, passed away on March 7, 2016, at Norwalk Hospital. She is survived by her loving son Michael J. Roberts of Norwalk, CT and several nieces and nephews.
Anne worked as a legal secretary to the late Judge Walton Clark of Darien and prior to that for Middlesex School in Darien. She was a devoted wife and mother to her son Michael. Anne loved life, loved cooking, baking, gardening, reading a good book and loved to do crossword puzzles and traveling especially to Bermuda. She will be dearly missed.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, March 20, at 1:30 PM at the Collins Funeral Home, 92 East Avenue, Norwalk. Calling hours will be held on Sunday from 11:30AM to 1:30PM.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Norwalk Hospital Foundation: Norwalk Hospital, 34 Maple Street, Norwalk, CT 06856.
