Otis Griffin (“Griff”) Lewis, 90.5, transitioned on October 30, 2018, peacefully in his own bed at his home in Norwalk.
Born in March 1928, he was the son of the late Otis P. and Grace Lewis. Dr. Lewis entered Massachusetts Institute of Technology on the Horace Mann freshman scholarship, where he majored in chemical engineering, and graduated with a Bachelor of Science. He served in the Korean War and, in 1960, received a Ph.D. in polymer chemistry from the University of Akron. He spent his entire career working as a research scientist for American Cyanamid/Davis & Geck, where he developed the first absorbable sutures. He is the author of “The Physical Constants of Linear Homopolymers,” and the soon-to-be published philosophical work, “The Great Ideas of Religion and Politics: An Epiphany on the Road to Danbury,” which he wrote in the last years of his life.
He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Fabronia “Peggy” Lewis né Fritz; daughters, Debra Lewis of Pottstown, PA and Diana Lewis and her husband John Truax of Manhattan; Rita Lewis his granddaughter; and many loving sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews.
Friends may call, Friday from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. at Collins Funeral Home, 92 East Avenue, Norwalk. A service will be celebrated on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at Collins Funeral Home. Internment will follow at Mountain Grove Cemetery in Bridgeport, CT.
