Robert Michael White, Sr., 95, of Norwalk, CT went to heaven on May 2, 2016, at his home surrounded by his loving wife Dora and family after a brief illness. Born in Westport, CT on July 22, 1920, he was the son of Nora Sullivan White of Cherichevenne, Ireland and James Edwin White, a Native American Indian of Bristol RI.
Raised in Westport, he was a caddy at Birchwood Country Club and worked at Remington Arms until he served in the U.S. Army during WWII, 150th Combat Engineers under General Patton in Normandy, Northern France, Central Europe, Adrennes, Rhineland which included the Battle of the Bulge and building the bridge that was used by General Patton’s initial invasion of Germany. Robert was recognized by CT Secretary of State with a Public Service Award in 2009 for his service. Upon his return from the war he was a milk man in Wilton and Westport. He met and married the love of his life Dora May Cromley on June 13, 1948 and was married for 67 years.
Employed by the State of CT Department of Transportation for 30 years and by MBI as a Special Constable for 21years, Robert took great pride in his work and enjoyed it every day. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion and a member of the East Avenue United Methodist Church. He was an avid photographer who enjoyed traveling, playing golf, singing hymns, playing the harmonica and singing to the love of his life, Dora, every day.
Robert is survived by his daughter; Pamela White (Urban), Son; Robert (Carolyn) White Jr., foster daughter; Ann Walsh (Hitchcock), Grandchildren; Christina Bernini, Robert M White III, Stephen (Tracey) Urban, Nicole McCoy, Kevin White, Amanda Urban, Rebecca Urban and Donald Urban III, Shannon and Allison Hitchcock, Great grandchildren; Anthony Ventrella, James Smith IV, Carmella Bradley, Carmella Bernini and Patricia and Gregory Wills all of Norwalk, brother; Charles White of Fairfield and four nieces and a nephew. He was predeceased by his brothers; James T. and Eugene White.
Calling hours will be held on Friday May 6, from 5:00 to 8:00 pm at Collins Funeral Home, 92 East Avenue, Norwalk. Funeral services will be on Saturday May 7, at 11:00 am at the East Avenue United Methodist Church, 244 East Avenue, Norwalk. Interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery, 81 Riverside Avenue, Norwalk. Donations may be made to the East Avenue United Methodist Church or a charity of your choice.
